We are extremely excited to announce our most recent grant – a $100,000 donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor and their Holy Family Home located in Southwest Philadelphia. This grant has been made possible through the generous contributions of the membership of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a matching donation of $50,000 from John and Bernadette Heenan.
About the Little Sisters
This group of nuns emerged as the unexpected heroes in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic that claimed so many lives. During this time, they selflessly cared for “the poorest of the poor” throughout Philadelphia. The impact of the sisters’ work was immeasurable as without them many hospitals would have been dangerously understaffed and unable to care for the infected.
Our Society has a well established history in support of the Little Sisters of the Poor. As we offer assistance to those impacted by the current pandemic, we also reaffirm our support for these women who are an example of both bravery and courage in difficult times.
Grant Uses
The Little Sisters of the Poor’s Holy Family Home is located in Southwest Philadelphia, and primarily houses elderly and infirmed residents from the area. This grant will help to provide much-needed updates throughout the building, and fund their building expansion program. One of the new rooms will be named in recognition of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and will be utilized for those of Irish descent whenever possible.
