Helping Our Community

September 24, 2020

Helping Our Community

Just this week, we’ve highlighted our new and continued support of local schools and universities that play a critical role in the vibrant Irish-American community here in the Philadelphia area.

Today, we want to highlight some of the other organizations that we have been able to support this year thanks to the continued generosity of our members.

Little Sisters of the Poor

Earlier this year, The Friendly Sons issued a $100,000 donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor and their Holy Family Home located in Southwest Philadelphia. This grant was made possible through membership support and a matching donation of $50,000 from John and Bernadette Heenan.

GAA Scholarship

The Gaelic Athletic Association promotes indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes in the Philadelphia area. This year their members generously contributed $5,000 towards their endowment, growing it to a total of $30,000.

Angel Flight East

Angel Flight East provides free air transportation to patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times. This year, the Friendly Sons donated $5,000 to Angel Flight East to help with much needed supplies.

Shriners Hospital for Children

Shriners Hospital provides remarkable life-changing care to children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and more. The Friendly Sons have donated $1,000 to assist a local family in need.

Philadelphia Protestant Home

The Philadelphia Protestant Home is a senior living community in Northeast Philadelphia that is particularly recognized for its quality of care for patients with Alzheimer’s or memory-less disease. The Friendly Sons have donated $1,000 to support their important work.

Irish Diaspora Center

The Irish Diaspora Center assists Irish citizens with passport and citizenship services, and hosts multiple community programs and senior outreach programs throughout the year. The Friendly Sons have donated $2,000 to assist in their efforts in 2020.

Commodore Barry Arts & Cultural Center (“The Irish Center”)

This establishment in Northwest Philadelphia is the host of many Irish cultural events throughout the year, and serves as a gathering place for members of the Irish community. As with most event venues, the Irish Center faced a difficult crisis in 2020 when gatherings of all sizes were curtailed. The Friendly Sons have donated $1,000 in order to help continue the operations of the Irish Center during this challenging time.

174 Trust

The 174 Trust is a community care organization based in North Belfast. The Trust is a non-denominational Christian organization which provides essential caring community services and offers many types of practical assistant to people of all ages. The Friendly Sons are proud to contribute $1,000 to the 174 Trust’s mission to bring people together.

And Many More…

We have also proudly supported the following organizations in 2020:

  • St. Patrick’s Day Observance Association
  • Ivins Outreach Center
  • St. John’s Hospice
  • Shamrock Reins
  • Duffy’s Cut Project
  • The Mayo Association of Philadelphia
  • The Donegal Association of Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Ceili Group Festival of Irish Music and Dance
